Toddler tactic: playtime inspiration

Copy this list and paste it on your fridge to refer to in desperate moments or when you have severe ‘mummy brain’.

Make an obstacle course indoors or out. Climb over cushions and through cardboard boxes, walk along a plank supported on phone books or bricks, or balance on a hose curled across the lawn.

Get physical. March, jump, hop or skip, kick or throw a ball, walk to the shops, around the block, in the rain and stomp in puddles or collect leaves, sticks, gum nuts or rocks on the way.

Play hide and seek. Take turns hiding and finding your tot or hide a toy and let her find it. If your child understands, tell her when she is getting ‘warmer’ (close) or ‘cool’ (not near the hidden object).

Pretend. Set up a shop with empty packets and bottle lids for play money, a hair salon with brushes, capes and an old hair dryer with the electrical cord cut off, or a hospital with Band Aids, ‘sick’ teddies and dolls, and a toy stethoscope.

Build. Use blocks, cartons and boxes, old sheets draped over a card table or pegged to a tree to make cubbies.

Play in water. Shallow water in an old baby bath is fun (with careful supervision) and it can be emptied on the garden for the plants to drink later. Give your child empty containers to fill and pour, a colander, squirty plastic bottles, an eggbeater or whisk.

Paint the fence. Use water in a bucket and a wide paintbrush. This game will last for ages as you enjoy some quiet time having a cuppa nearby!

Plant some seeds. You can set up a spot outside, or plant inside using jars or saucers. Carrot tops will grow in a saucer, and cress seeds grow hair for eggshell people. To make them, use half an eggshell with a face drawn on in texta, then fill with wet cotton wool – the cress will grow into long green hair.

Sing and dance. Put on some music, swing scarves or coloured lengths of ribbon tied onto plastic bangles, bring out the instrument box, and boogie!
